FORMER GOVERNOR PETE WILSON ENDORSES CHAVEZ
SAN DIEGO—Former Governor Pete Wilson, who left California with $16 billion in budget surplus at the end of his second term, has endorsed Rocky Chavez in his campaign for North San Diego County’s assembly seat, District 76.
Governor Wilson, who served as mayor of San Diego for more than a decade during the city’s revitalization, remains deeply connected with the region. Wilson also represented the 76th District as a member of the California Assembly.
“As one who has had the honor to serve as a proud Assemblyman of the 76th District, I proudly endorse Rocky Chavez to represent the good people of today’s 76th District with the same fighting spirit and devotion to duty that he has demonstrated throughout his distinguished career in the U.S. Marine Corps and his service to the people of Oceanside,” said Governor Wilson.

BRIGADIER GENERAL ROBERT L. "BOB" CARDENAS, USAF (Ret.) ENDORSES ROCKY CHAVEZ FOR THE 76TH
SAN DIEGO--Aviation legend General Cardenas, USAF (Ret) has endorsed Rocky Chavez to represent California Assembly District 76. Bob Cardenas' WWII activities read like a action adventure script - from the time he joined the 44th Bomb Group (the flying 8 balls) to being wounded and shot down over German lines, swimming across Lake Constance, interned, he then escaped with help of Swiss civilians and French Resistance. Cardenas went on to become a test pilot and was Command Pilot on the B-29 that took up Chuck Yeager in the X-1 when it broke the sound barrier Oct. 14, 1947. He was also the chief test pilot on the new design concept of an eight jet engine Flying wing which several years later became the B-2 bomber. After he was promoted to General he was placed in command of the Air Force Special Operations Force and inducted into the Commando Hall of Fame.
Chavez and Cardenas have worked together on Veterans issues in California since Rocky's stint on the California Department of Veterans Affairs and both were involved recently in pushing for additional signage at Miramar National Cemetery.
“In dealing with Rocky over the years of working for Veterans and the Military Rocky has always displayed his Marine heritage of straightforward honest, no nonsense approach. Corruption and double-dealing are not part of the crucial training that Rocky received in his climb to the rank of Colonel in the Corps. You can expect the same as your Assemblyman.”
Cardenas has been honored by the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Presidential Citation among other honors and awards.
“It’s a supreme honor to be endorsed by General Cardenas as his whole life has been about going to extreme edges and being successful - as a pilot, as a commander and as a state and community leader on veterans issues,” commented Chavez. "Bob Cardenas sets the bar high for us all and has done so since he flew his first mission in WWII on the Southern Comfort"
Chavez served as a Marine for more than twenty-eight years, retiring as a Colonel. He then went on to serve nearly a decade on the Oceanside City Council before leading the Department of Veterans Affairs in Sacramento. In 2002, Chavez co-founded the charter school, School of Business and Technology, designed to bring together education and careers with an emphasis on high-tech sectors. A candidate with a history of service and a commitment to economic development, Rocky Chavez, has earned the endorsement of the state’s largest farming organization in his bid for the state Assembly. “San Diego County is a unique and important agricultural region, and Rocky Chavez has the background and experience to represent the area well in the Assembly,” California Farm Bureau President Paul Wenger said.
Noting that Chavez worked on farms during college to pay for his education, Wenger said Chavez’s experience with the day-to-day demands of farm life “gave him firsthand knowledge of how hard work leads to success.”
A veteran of 28 years in the Marine Corps, Chavez is a former Oceanside City Council member who also served as undersecretary and acting secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Rocky Chavez has shown a commitment to his community through his military service, his active involvement in community affairs and his work on behalf of veterans,” Wenger said. “Rocky’s time in the Department of Veterans Affairs also gave him insight into how to make government more efficient and accountable. We look forward to working with him in the Assembly.”

Key endorsements in North County Assembly race
By Christopher Cadelago <http://www.utsandiego.com/staff/christopher-cadelago/>
Thursday, August 16, 2012
Things are heating up in the race for the 76th Assembly District where Republicans Rocky Chavez and Sherry Hodges this week each received key endorsements.
Hodges, a former aide to several local lawmakers, snagged the coveted endorsement of the Republican Party of San Diego County, no small feat in a race that pits two of its own party against each other. County GOP Chairman Tony Krvaric said in a written statement that the party was proud to endorse Hodges for the district that spans from Encinitas to Oceanside to Vista, taking in Carlsbad and Camp Pendleton.
The party endorsement, which came without a vote to spare, was not without controversy. A last-minute bit of campaigning by Hodges’ supporters included distributing a flier featuring a photograph of Chavez, Democratic Rep. Bob Filner and Sgt. Maj. William “Movin’” Vann <http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jun/28/black-marines-from-1940s-take-hill/> receiving a certificate of special congressional recognition as the 2010 nominee for Veteran of the Year from the Montford Point Marine Association, Chapter 12.

Douglas said Chavez’s leadership experience and character make him ready to represent North San Diego County voters in Sacramento.

“I am humbled by the support of Farrah Douglas, someone who has met great challenges in her life while making a difference in business and government,” said Chavez. “She truly cares for her community, and I know she will continue to be a leader.”

Garrick currently serves in California’s 74th District, redrawn by this year’s redistricting to include most of the new 76th District.
During his time in Sacramento, Garrick championed a “no new taxes” budget that reduced government spending and contained budget/pension reforms. As Assembly Republican Leader, Garrick led the Republican Caucus in a California Jobs First campaign aimed at job growth. Before taking office Garrick started successful businesses in telecommunications and real estate and also served as an appointee in the Reagan Administration.
“It’s truly a privilege to receive the support of Assemblyman Martin Garrick,” said Chavez. “Like Assemblyman Garrick, I’ll fight to hold government accountable and to create an economic climate in California where jobs are created – not outsourced.”

DECORATED VETERAN STANDS FOR ROCKY
OCEANSIDE—One of the most highly decorated veterans in North San Diego County has endorsed former Marine Colonel Rocky Chavez in his bid for California Assembly, District 76th. Today, former Air Force Major and Air Force Cross recipient Neil Black signaled his support for Chavez.
Chavez is running on a platform devoted to veterans issues and government accountability and has served as the Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Black was awarded the Air Force Cross after being held for seven years in a POW camp in Vietnam. The Air Force Cross is second in distinction only to the Medal of Honor.
“Rocky’s service to his country as a Marine and as an elected official prove that he will stand up for the people of his district,” Black said. “As a fellow veteran, I’m proud to endorse Rocky Chavez.”
In 1965, Black was a Pararescue-man on board a helicopter searching for a downed pilot. He and other members of the flight crew were captured when the aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed. They were held in North Vietnam until February, 1973. Black shares the record as the longest-held enlisted POW.
He later became a pilot, retiring as an Air Force Major in 1987. Following his military service, Black became active in local government and currently serves on the Carlsbad Planning Commission.
Even after his ordeal, Black is grateful. “I’m glad to be an American,” he says. “My thoughts go out to the guys I served with who didn’t make it home.”
“Neil Black has given so much for his country, but he still humbly recognizes those who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in military service.” said Chavez. “Having Neil’s support is so meaningful as we work to provide education and opportunities to returning service members.

ROCKY ENDORSED BY NORTH COUNTY TIMES
OCEANSIDE--Rocky Chavez has been endorsed by the North County Times newspaper in his bid for California Assembly, District 76. The Times also endorsed opponent, Farrah Douglas.
An exerpt is below. Read more in the North County Times.
" . . . Chavez's experience is likewise broad. He served nearly three decades in the Marine Corps before helping found and run a charter school. He also served on the Oceanside City Council, as well as in the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
Both Chavez and Douglas also recognize the value of cooperation for members of the minority party in California's Legislature. With Democrats holding a viselike grip on power in Sacramento, and likely to do so for the foreseeable future, the only way for Republican legislators to have any relevance is to form alliances with independent-minded Democrats. That Chavez and Douglas have made clear their understanding of this political reality is refreshing; naivete accomplishes very little in politics. . . ."

Former councilman runs for state assembly
by Promise Yee
Oceanside--Former Oceanside councilman Rocky Chavez announced he will be running for assemblyman of the new
California 76 th Assembly District in November 2012 at a supporters rally on Sept. 14. The new 76th district represents Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad and Encinitas.
The rally to announce Chavez’ run was held on the factory floor of the Federal Heath Sign Company. Production work paused briefly as Chavez addressed a crowd of several dozen supporters and factory workers and said his focus will be on jobs, education and government efficiency.
“I’m running on the issues and am open to discuss those issues,” Chavez said. “Once you get elected you need to represent all residents. My record as councilman shows exactly that. I listened to people talk about their neighborhoods and can bring that understanding to the state.”
Chavez served as a councilman for seven years. During his time in office he served on the regional homeless task force, which brought area wide resources for the homeless together as one networked system. Resource providers were put in touch with each other so they could hone their efforts and reduce unnecessary duplication of services.
“We were able to tie services along with nonprofits into a decisive system,” Chavez said. “It wasn’t done before.”
Chavez most recently served as Active Secretary for the California Department of Veterans Affairs. He oversaw the state department switch its focus and offer more support services to veterans. Programs were developed and implemented to help troops deal with post traumatic stress disorder. This support helped decreased the number of veterans who ended up in jail.
Chavez also served in the military for 25 years and earned the rank of colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps.
As assemblyman, jobs creation will be one of his top priorities. Chavez said private enterprises will be vital in creating new job opportunities.
“We need to establish an environment that supports entrepreneurship and a creative environment,” Chavez said.
Chavez said education will be key in preparing workers and needs to be redefined to meet current needs. Community colleges, technical trade schools and online learning will soon play a bigger role in preparing individuals for careers.
“I’m running for state assembly because I’ve learned the role of state government is to support economic development, streamline the process, and give small businesses and individuals the ability to improve this economy,” Chavez said.
ADMIRAL RONNE FROMAN ENDORSES ROCKY CHAVEZ FOR STATE ASSEMBLY POST
OCEANSIDE—Admiral Ronne Froman today announced her endorsement of Rocky Chavez for California State Assembly District 76.
“Rocky has really done it,” said Froman. “He knows government, and he has proven that he can reduce the cost of government without diminishing the quality of services. He is a Marine veteran and our state certainly needs his kind of leadership.”
Admiral Froman served in the United States Navy for 31 years and was the director of Ashore Readiness for the Chief of Naval Operations, responsible for nearly 90 Navy stations and bases around the world with a $7 billion budget. She was a Senior Vice President at General Atomics and currently works in education and a veterans program called REBOOT. She has received numerous awards including the Defense Distinguished Medal, 2011 Woman of the Year in California, 76th Assembly District (then a San Diego district), San Diego Magazine Woman of the Year, Girl Scouts Cool Woman and San Diego Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business.
“It is an honor to be endorsed by Admiral Froman,” said Chavez. “She is an accomplished and highly respected leader, not only in the military but in private industry and government as well.”
Froman and Chavez have a long relationship and most recently worked together when Chavez served as Acting Secretary of the California Dept. of Veterans Affairs.
Chavez announced his campaign for the 76th California Assembly District last week on the factory floor of a sign manufacturer in North County, with an address focusing on jobs and the economy, education, veterans, and government efficiency. ROCKY CHAVEZ HOLDS KICK-OFF FOR CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY
Says campaign will be about jobs, education, veterans and government efficiency
OCEANSIDE—Rocky Chavez this week announced the start of his campaign for District 76 of the California Assembly at a gathering held on the factory floor of a sign manufacturer in North County. The newly created district includes Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad and Encinitas and also reaches deep into Camp Pendleton.
“This is the start of something really positive for our community,” said Sandra Fichter, last year’s Veteran of the Year, who introduced Chavez at the event. “I know how important jobs are for the people who live in this district.”
Chavez recently served as Acting Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs in Sacramento after almost a decade on the Oceanside City Council. “I’m running for the Assembly because I've learned that the role for government is to support economic development, streamline the process – and give small businesses and individuals the ability to improve this economy.” Chavez drew an appreciative reaction from the group of supporters and factory workers when he wryly commented that some Sacramento entities were structured as “self-licking ice cream cones.”
Chavez, a strong proponent of education, stressed the need to improve the state’s schools to allow students to be able to compete in the global market. Education is a critical component of an environment that fuels economic growth, and California needs to support a statewide culture of lifetime learning. Chavez said the statewide community college system could be better utilized in this regard.
Rocky Chavez, who served as a Marine for over twenty-eight years and retired a Colonel, also said he would stand up for those who have served this country, working to improve educational opportunities and job prospects for all California veterans, especially those just returning from current conflicts. He also discussed improving government efficiency by aligning the state budget to a strategic plan, taking into account execution and funding.
